    APPLICATION

    Retrovir is used to treat HIV infection when used in conjunction with other medications. It is also used with other medications to help prevent HIV transmission to women to the fetus during pregnancy.

    MODE OF APPLICATION

    DO NOT use Retrovir, if:

    • you are allergic to any ingredient in Retrovir
    • have an enlarged liver, high levels of lactic acid in the blood, or abnormal liver function tests
    • you are taking doxorubicin, ribavirin, stavudine, or any medicine that contains zidovudine

    Contact your doctor immediately if any of these items apply to you.

    THE MECHANISM OF ACTION

    Retrovir is an antiviral agent. It works by blocking reproduction of the HIV virus.

    MISSED DOSE

    Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If this occurred while taking your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine the next time a regular basis. Do not take 2 doses at once.

    STORAGE

    Store this medication at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from heat and light.

    PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES

    DO NOT use Retrovir, if:

    • you are allergic to any ingredient in Retrovir;
    • have an enlarged liver, high levels of lactic acid in the blood, or abnormal liver function testsl
    • you are taking doxorubicin, ribavirin, stavudine, or any medicine that contains zidovudine.

    Contact your doctor immediately if any of these items apply to you.

    Before using Retrovir:
    Some medicines may interact with Retrovir. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following applies to you:

    • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or nourish
    • If you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplements
    • if you have allergy to medicines, foods or other substances
    • If you have a problem with the bone marrow, low levels of white blood cells, kidney problems, hepatitis C virus (HCV) or other liver problems
    • If you are overweight

    Some medicines may interact with Retrovir. Tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

    • zalcitabine because they may cause serious problems with the pancreas
    • Fluconazole, ganciclovir, interferon alfa, probenecid, valproic acid, or any medicine that contains zidovudine because they may increase the risk of exposure to Retrovir
    • Doxorubicin, ribavirin, or stavudine because they may decrease the effectiveness of Retrovir

    This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your doctor how Retrovir can interact with other medications you are taking. Consult with your doctor before you start taking, stop or change the dose of any medicine.

    SIDE EFFECTS

    Consult your doctor if any of these most common side effects become frequent:
    Constipation, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, weakness.

    Contact your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur:
    Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, shortness of breath, chest tightness, swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue), dark urine, drowsiness, rapid breathing, fever, chills, or persistent sore throat, muscle aches , red skin, blisters, seizures, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, unusual tiredness or weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes.
